April 2009

2 April, 2009

30th April 2009

Last day of April and what a lovely one.  Clear blue skies with very little breeze.  Temperatures around 25-26 degrees C for most of the day.

29th April 2009

Clear blue skies all day, with only the odd patch of fluffy white clouds floating by occasionally.  The breeze was a little chilly at times which made the heat  and strength of the sun rather deceiving – I now have red arms and legs to prove it.

28th April 2009

Cloudy for most of the day, with the odd glimpse of the sun.  Still feeling warm enough to sit outside with temperatures ranging from 19-21 degrees C.  Skies cleared by late afternoon to give a lovely clear and starlit evening.

27th April 2009

More sunshine and clouds with quite a cool breeze.  Lovely when the sun came out but felt a bit chilly when it disappeared back behind the clouds.

26th April 2009

A mixture of sunshine and clouds, depending on where you were!  Sunny in Es Castell during the afternoon but just beyond Sant Climent it was very cloudy with a few hints that the sun was there somewhere.  Temperature in shade showing 20.8 (at 5 p.m.) so still very pleasant.

25th April 2009

Alot more cloud around today with only a few glimpses of the sun.  Still fairly mild though and not unpleasant.

24th April 2009

Another beautiful day with plenty of very warm sunshine around.  Not sure what the actual temperature was but it was hot enough to burn if out in it for too long.  Slight breeze but very pleasant.

23rd April 2009

What a fabulous day – best one this year so far.  Temperatures still around 21-22 degrees C in the shade (at 7.45 p.m.).  A bit breezy but actually quite welcome today in the heat of the sun!

22nd April 2009

Not a bad day but far windier that it has been lately, making it feel a bit cooler.  A mixture of sunshine and clouds throughout the day.  Temperatures reaching around 18 degrees C in the shade.

21st April 2009

A very wet and miserable start to the day but the clouds soon parted and the sun came out.  Lovely for the rest of the day but quite a strong breeze.

20th April 2009

A lovely warm and sunny morning with clouds increasing during the afternoon.  By around tea-time the heavens opened, giving us the works.  Torrential rain, thunder, lightening and hailstone!

19th April 2009

Beautiful day with barely a cloud to be seen.  In the direct sunshine our thermometer showed temperatures of around 31-32 degrees C.

18th April 2009

Another sunny, bright day with temperatures reaching up to 20 degrees C in the shade.  A few spots of rain late afternoon though I believe there were a couple of heavy downpours in other areas of the island.

17th April 2009

Plenty of sunshine and blue sky with temperatures ranging from 16 – 20 degrees C (in the shade).  Bit of  a breeze but nothing untoward!

16th April 2009

Another sunny day with only one or two fluffy white clouds floating by – rather quickly because of the fairly strong breeze!  Temperatures much the same as yesterday.

15th April 2009

A lovely sunny start to the day with temperatures throughout the day ranging between 17 – 20 degrees C.  Very dark clouds appeared for a while midday(ish) and I understand there were some very heavy showers, though not here in Es Castell.  During the evening/night there was, however, plenty of rain about but this had cleared by morning.

14th April 2009

Woke up to brilliant blue skies and sunshine, which remained for the whole of the day.  A bit of a breeze which did make it feel slightly cooler if not sheltered.  Temperatures in the shade showing between 17-19 degrees C.

13th April 2009

A very grey and wet early start to the day but the forecast was for better things and, as promised, the rain stopped and the sun came out pretty early on in the day.  Quite a breeze which did make it feel slightly cooler but generally a very nice day.

12th April 2009

A very grey and damp day.  Also quite cold but that didn’t put us off enjoying a BBQ and then a very competitive egg rolling race – well done Max.

11th April 2009

A mixture of sunshine and clouds with quite a strong breeze.  Very pleasant though with temperatures ranging between 19-23 degees C.

10th April 2009

Mainly sunny but odd spells of cloudiness.  Nice and warm in the direct sunshine though the breeze did make it feel cooler if you were in an unsheltered area.  Lovely day.

9th April 2009

Very wet and miserable during the morning but cleared up over lunchtime with plenty of sunshine during the afternoon.  Quite breezy.

8th April 2009

Cloudy start to the day but cleared up and turned into a lovely warm day again.

7th April 2009

Plenty of sunshine for most of the day.  Clouded over around 4ish and felt quite alot cooler because of the breeze.

6th April 2009

Lots of sunshine with hardly a cloud in sight.  Breeze quite cool though which took me by surprise – wished I’d taken a cardi/jacket with me on our visit to Mahon.

5th April 2009

Beautiful sunny and warm day, so nice in fact, that we had Sunday lunch outside, complete with Christmas Pudding(!) which my daughter kindly brought across with her.  Lovely afternoon with all the family, and one or two glasses of wine.  Temperature around 26/27 degrees C.

4th April 2009

Sunshine and a couple of showers first thing and then things just got better.  Sunshine for most of the day with a few clouds occasionally getting in the way.  So nice we spent a lovely couple of hours on the beach at Es Grau.

3rd April 2009

Another rainy day with some quite heavy showers at times.  Finally started brightening up by mid-late afternoon with the sun making brief appearances for the remainder of the day.

2nd April 2009

Will it every stop?  Well it did for a short time around 2.30 p.m. and then rained on and off for the rest of the afternoon/evening, with short spells of glorious sunshine in between – hopefully a sign of things to come in the next few days!

1st April 2009

Yet more rain.  A very grey and damp day with a couple of very short-lived sightings of the sunshine.

Rain, rain and more rain!  A very wet day until late afternoon when it finally stopped and the sky cleared.  Quite a cool day with a gusty breeze making it feel cooler.

28th March 2009

A rainy start to the day but it did stop between around 10.30 – 11.00 a.m. but remained cloudy for most of the day.  The sunshine did manage to poke its head through a few times, for short periods.  Still feeling very mild though with temperatures between 18-20 degrees C.

A mixture of sunshine and clouds and feeling nice and warm in the direct sun.

A lovely sunny and warm day with the breeze not feeling as cool as it has lately.  Thermometer is currently showing between 25-26 degrees C in the direct sunshine.

21st March 2009

Lovely sunny day again with a slight breeze which made it feeler cooler.

20th March 2009

More cloud around today and breeze a bit stronger than yesterday, making it feel a bit cooler than of late.  Plenty of sunshine mixed in the clouds though, so nothing to complain about.

19th March 2009

Another lovely day with clear blue skies.  Slightly cooler due to a light breeze but still very, very pleasant.

18th March 2009

Another warm and sunny day in paradise!  In the direct sunshine the temperature (on our thermometer) showed around 26-27 degrees C.

17th March 2009

Wonderful, blue skies, very little breeze and lovely and warm – still showing 24 degrees C on our thermometer at 4 p.m. (a bit of a sun trap though!).

16th March 2009

A bit more breezy today, with quite alot more cloud around.  Thermometer (in the shade) showing a maximum of up to 16 degrees, so still not bad really 🙂

15th March 2009

Quite a  bit cooler with a mixture of cloud and sunshine and a slight breeze.  Still very pleasant but definitely not as warm as yesterday.

14th March 2009

Fabulous day – temperature on our thermometer, in the full sun, was showing 33 degrees C over the lunchtime hours (honest!).  Ideal for sitting on “the Fons”, enoying a cool drink.

Lovely and sunny and warm with temperatures in the shade around (at least) 18-19 degrees C.  Beautiful day.

12th March 2009

Sunny and breezy during the morning, with the winds dropping during the afternoon.  Very pleasant and warm in sheltered spots.

More cloud than sunshine today (where I was anyway!) but still pretty good, temperature-wise.  A bit more sunshine in the afternoon with a light breeze.

10th March 2009

A mixture of sunshine and cloud, pretty much all day.  Temperatures still very pleasant and very little wind.

9th March 2009

Lots of sunshine during the morning then cloudy for much of the afternoon.  Skies cleared again late afternoon and temperatures throughout the day were very pleasant.

8th March 2009

Glorious day with beautiful blue skies and not a cloud in sight.  Temperatures up to around 20-21 degrees C.  So nice in fact that “sun stopped play” (gardening) and a trip to “The Fons” was in order for a cooling drink.  W0nderful.

7th March 2009

VERY windy but blue skies and sunshine all day.  Temperatures feeling slighter cooler because of the wind.  Wind finally calmed down around 6 p.m.

6th March 2009

A very wet and windy start to the day but the clouds eventually disappeared, leaving lovely blue skies.  Temperatures between 12-15 degrees again but remained very windy throughout the day.

5th March 2009

A mixture of sunshine and clouds but very windy.  Temperature anywhere between 12 -15 degrees.  Clouded over by teatime with lots of rain during the evening and night.

4th March 2009

Very wet start to the day and looked as though it was set to last.  Cleared up by mid/late morning and then a mixture of sunshine and cloud.  Temperature currently between 16-17 degees C.

3rd March 2009

Another pleasant day but with more cloud around.  Showers in the afternoon which turned much heavier during the evening/night.

2nd March 2009

Yet another lovely, sunny and warm day.  It did look as though it was going to pour down whilst we were in Son Bou around lunchtime but we seemed to escape any downpours when we headed back towards Mahon.  Clouded over by teatime but still feeling very mild.

1st March 2009

What a lovely day to start the month of March off.  Blue skies and very little breeze with temperatures at midday between 21-23 degrees C.  Starting clouding over by tea-time but still feeling very mild.

February 2009

1 February, 2009

28th February 2009

Started off lovely and sunny but soon became cloudy.  Very damp and clammy feeling to the day, all day with temperatures quite a lot lower than yesterday.

27th February 2009

Yet another fabulous day – thermometer outside showed a reading of 25 degrees C in the direct sunshine around lunchtime.  Clear blue skies again with a very slight breeze.

26th February 2009

Another beautiful, sunny day with clear blue skies.  Slight chill in the breeze though, making the temperature feel a couple of degrees or so lower than yesterday, but still lovely.

25th February 2009

Beautiful day with thermometer showing around 23 degrees C in the direct sunshine.  Winds have dropped considerably – blue skies all around – wonderful.

24th February 2009

Very much the same as the last couple of days, pretty windy, with a cool feel to the breeze.  Out of the wind it feels lovely and warm.

23rd February 2009

Sunny and pretty windy.  Temperature up to around 20 degrees C if sheltered from the wind but the wind does have quite a chilly feel to it.

21st & 22nd February 2009

Beautiful day – lots of sunshine and very little breeze.  Temperature in direct sunshine around 20-21 degrees C.

A lovely day with temperatures reaching 21 degrees C in the direct sun!  Still quite breezy but the wind seems to have lost alot of the chill factor, which made for a very pleasant day indeed.

17th February 2009

Very similar to yesterday but possibly a little more sunshine.  Feels really quite cool in the wind but in a sheltered place, in the sunshine – lovely.

16th February 2009

A mixture of cloud and sunshine with quite a cool breeze.  In the shade the temp didn’t get much above 10 degrees C.

15th February 2009

14th February 2009

Wet, cold and windy for most of the day, with the rain finally stopping late afternoon.

13th February 2009

Very similar to yesterday – very windy still and temperatures around the same.  Wind slowly died down by late afternoon/early evening, and then the rain started.

12th February 2009

A very windy, but bright and sunny day.  Temperature around 10-11 degrees C in the shade but felt considerably warmer in the direct sun, especially if you were able to shelter from the strong winds!

11th February 2009

The day started and ended with showers but for most of the rest of the day it was lovely and warm in the sunshine with temperatures between around 14-15 degrees C.

10th February 2009

Not such a bright and sunny day today, though the temperature was still around 15-16 degrees C (in the shade).  Right now my thermometer is showing 13.4 degrees, at around 8.30 p.m. The forecast had been for very strong winds but no sign of them here on the eastern side of the island.  Wind has been picking up a bit into the evening so it remains to be seen what tomorrow will bring!

9th February 2009

A beautiful day in Menorca.  Thermometer in direct sun says 23 degrees C and in the shade 18.  Blue skies and very little breeze – wonderful!

7th February 2009

Wet and cool start to the day and remained pretty much the same for the rest of the day with temperatures not getting much about 10 degrees C.  Thunder, lightening, rain and hailstone (!) during the evening/night.

6th February 2009

Fairly sunny start but cloud thickening during the morning and now it’s raining!  Thermometer showing 10.1 degrees C.

5th February 2009

Another nice start to the day, mild and sunny though clouding over later in the afternoon.  Temperatures pretty much on a par with the last few days.

3rd & 4th February 2009

Two lovely days with temps between 14-16 degrees C (in the shade) and feeling much, much warmer in the sun.  A bit more of a breeze today but still very pleasant.  Temperature showing 13.2 at the moment (nearly 6 p.m.)

2nd February 2009

A grey and wet start to the day, though the thermometer showed a reading of 12.5 at 8.30 a.m.  As the day went on the clouds thinned and blue sky emerged, giving a very pleasant afternoon with temperatures ranging between 16-17 degrees C (in the shade).  In the full sun it felt very much warmer – a lovely day.

1st February 2009

A cool start to the day (around 7 degrees C) but warming up, with clear blue skies for most of the morning.  Cloudy during the afternoon with temperatures between 13-14 degrees C.

Menorcan Horses

20 January, 2009

Well, we returned to Es Castell square on Sunday lunchtime to see what all the sand had been put down for and were very pleasantly surprised when four of the beautiful Menorcan horses (and riders!) arrived to show us their fancy footwork.

menorcan-horse2As I have said previously, I am not a great horse lover but there is definitely something special about these magnificent creatures and I just couldn’t tear my eyes away from them.  They are both majestic and “pretty”, if that’s the right word to use, and so elegant.  It is virtually impossible to see or hear the riders/owners instructing these horses to change direction, change their footwork etc. – they just appear to know when and what to do.

Below is a little information about the history of the Menorcan horse.

Menorquina horse

The Menorquina breed of horse is from Menorca and is famous for its exciting performances at traditional festives and fiestas throughout the island.  The horses are descendents of the Spanish Andalusian and Arabian breeds.

The origin of the Cavall de Raca Menorquina (the horse of the Menorquina race) can actually be traced back to two significant periods in the history of  Menorca.

  1. In 1301 the establishment of the cavalry troops by King Jaume II of Majorca, where the horses that were used as cavalry mounts were agile,  strong and manageable.  These are all traits which are still as important in the Spanish breeds of today and which are typical of the early ancestor of the Menorquina horse, the Andalusian.
  2. The second important period was in the 1700’s – the arrival of the English.  The English brought horses of thoroughbred blood and the influence of this can be seen in the elegant heads and long legs of the Menorquina horses.

Fiesta San Antonio Abad – Menorca

18 January, 2009

We had a wander into Es Castell square yesterday morning to see what the Fiesta San Antonio Abad was about, given our knowledge of all things Menorcan is still very limited.  Apparently, during the Fiesta a mass is held in honour of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals, with a procession offering animal blessings.

JCB in Es Castell Square

We sat for a while in the square watching a large JCB levelling out a great mound of sand and wondering what all that was about.  Slowly but surely more and more people and their animals started appearing in the square, also drawn to the JCB and its amazing manouvering abilities.

After some time people started heading off, with their animals, in the direction of the local church so we decided to follow and at the same time received a call from my brother saying “Aren’t you coming”.  Five minutes later we arrived in the right place and were surrounded by quite a selection of animals/pets, all waiting in line to be blessed by the local priest.

spot-the-goldfishIncluded in the line up was an obviously well-loved cuddly toy dog and a bowl with two goldfish in it!

After the smaller animals had been blessed, the majestic Menorcan horses were then ridden past the priest to be blessed – causing a couple to be a little jittery, which is understable, having water sprinkled in their faces.  The fact these beautiful animals were literally just inches away from the crowd didn’t appear to unnerve or concern anyone – can you imagine that back in the UK?

menorcan-horseApparently the horses are back in the square today at midday, hence all the sand being prepared yesterday – something I definitely don’t want to miss.  I am not really a big fan of horses (if truth be told they rather frighten me!) but these horses are so beautiful and stand so proud.  Perfect day too – blue skies and lots of sunshine around.

January 2009

16 January, 2009

31st January 2009

A mild morning – thermometer said 13.6 degrees C at 8.30 a.m.  Now up to 14 degrees but a cloudy day with no sign of the sunshine as yet (11.20 a.m.).  Slight breeze.

30th January 2009

Foggy (?) start to the morning over Es Castell/Mahon.  Not sure whether foggy is the right description, might have been sea mist or something else, but definitely reduced visibility.  Mild again with temperatures around 14/15 degrees C.

29th January 2009

Another lovely day but a few more clouds around.  When the sun did come out it felt very warm – around 17/18 degrees C at least.

28th January 2009

Beautiful day but not sure of the temperature as I was out all day with Martin, cleaning swimming pools.  Felt very warm – jacket off, sleeves rolled up sort of warmth so it must have been around 18/19 degrees C.  Very little breeze and overall a lovely day in Menorca!

27th January 2009

Started off wet and cool but the sun soon came out and temperatures have been around 12-13 degrees C (in the shade) though the thermometer outside the chemists in St Clement said 19 degrees!  Quite breezy which does make it feel cooler.

26th January 2009

Quite breezy at times, plenty of sunshine but a couple of short rainfalls first thing.  Temperature fluctuating between 11 – 13 degrees C.

25th January 2009

Beautiful day today.  The winds have dropped (though I believe they are back with us later in the week) and the sun has been shining all day – thermometer at the Mahon roundabout said 15 degrees – very, very pleasant.

24th January 2009

Very windy today but very mild too – around 15/16 degrees so quite pleasant if you are sheltered from the wind.  Very sunny too.

23rd January 2009

Started off feeling quite mild but (and it might just be me) it now feels quite a bit cooler.  Temperature is supposed to be arround 15 degrees but it doesn’t feel quite as warm as that to me.  The forecast thingy on the home page of our website is proving to be quite accurate and has a good indication of the next 15 days if you want to check it out.

21st & 22nd January 2009

Oops!  I knew I had something to do.  Not really alot to report about the weather over the last couple of days, sunshine, slight breeze and the odd shower.  Temperatures around 12-14 degrees C but does feel a little colder if not in a sheltered spot.

20th January 2009

Around 12 degrees C this morning though in the direct sunshine it feels more like 14-15 degrees.  Lovely and sunny with a few cluds around.  The wind has dropped considerably since yesterday/last night though there is a slight coolish breeze.

19th January 2009

Temperatures around 14-15 degrees with quite a strong, blustery wind.  Feels milder than it has for the last few days.

18th January 2009

Around 12/13 degrees C with a coolish wind.

17th January 2009

A mixture of sunshine and clouds so far today, with a fairly steady temperature of around 13 degrees C (in the shade).  No wind to speak of, though looking at the forecast for next week, it looks as though it is on its way!

16th January 2009

Well, today has been beautiful, sunny and fairly warm with a light wind.  Temperature has been around 12 degrees C though in the direct sunshine it has felt warmer.

My husband (Martin) came in from work this afternoon and said the digital thermometer at the big roundabout in Mahon (on the road from Es Castell) said the temperature was 19 degrees, and the one on the port said 12.

Hola from Menorca

28 December, 2008

Welcome to Owners Club Menorca Blog

We are primarily a family-run swimming pool cleaning and maintenance business in Menorca, with more details available on our website here but I wanted to “have a go” at blogging!

I have used (and still do) a blog before but it was set up for me, whereas this is my first attempt at creating one myself, so bear with me – I have lots to learn!
